The Paper Kiss...The incredible true story of my last first kiss!

On release day for my debut I got to do some of my favorite things. First, release my first book baby into the world. Second, guest post on the Jaunty Quills Blog for one of my favorite NYT Bestsellers Kristan Higgins. Third, talk about kissing. ((Dreamy Sigh)) And I'm a firm believer no kiss should ever go to waste so I want to share this blog about my LAST FIRST KISS. **(Warning... this post contains red hot smooching!)**

“Two peoples’ lips together, their breath, a little bit of their soul…
A kiss is where the romance is.”

I have to agree with Meg Ryan’s character in one of my all-time favorite movies French Kiss. (If you haven’t seen it, buy or rent immediately!) Now, not all kisses are romantic, but whether in real life or in fiction it’s hard to deny that kisses are powerful things.

Admittedly, a tangible touch someone lays smack dab on your kisser is likely more exciting than reading about two people smooching in a book, though I’d argue to say a paper kiss puts an on-screen kiss to shame any day of the week for the sheer power of your imagination at work, but I digress.
We’re talking about kissing, one of my absolute favorite things to write, read, and shoot, partake in myself. Not all kisses are created equal, certainly. And a first kiss … whether the first ever, or the first with someone in particular, is irrevocably, epically significant—which is why it’s usually the most anticipated moment in a love story.

Those baited breaths, that suspended moment of longing, of doubt. The anticipation strung so tight your chest can barely contain your savage heart. And then… Wham! Lips touch, hearts collide, souls are shaken, and lives are changed. Or they’re not. But what I love about fiction is where that moment takes me. And this is where…

Forget about my first kiss. That was so far from magical it was practically tragic. Since I’m not much for shyness and I’m a die-hard romantic up to my ears in diapers and dirty laundry, let's talk about something swoon-worthy like a life-changing kiss.

If we rewind about ten years, before I married my handsome hunk of a husband and had three of his wonderfully exhausting children, you’d find me tutoring the college baseball player in statistics. This usually took place on campus or at a local coffeehouse. But while I waited for the blockhead to get a clue and ask me out on an actual date, we studied. Talked. Became friends. It was incredibly frustratingly awesome. And then one night we studied at his apartment where his rowdy roommates had us escaping to the quiet of his room whereupon we sat on his bed and actually studied statistics.

Totally romantic.

One would think this would be a convenient place to make his intentions known. But that wasn’t the man I was falling for. This was not an opportunistic moment for him. It was the foundation for a much bigger goal. So at the end of the night, when I was about ready to crawl out of my skin, he took my hand, walked me to my car, and then … asked if he could kiss me good night.

There was something spellbinding about that question. If I were writing the scene I knew I wouldn’t have had the hero ask. In my mind I'd have him be decisive and claim that kiss as if his life depended on the meeting of our lips rather than his show of superhuman restraint in making me grant him access to my pearly whites.

Funny thing about romance, it's not usually what we expect or what we've been programmed by fairy tales to think it should be. And perhaps therein lies the magic of falling. An equation can’t compute it. The variables, well, they vary. Statistics have no bearing. In other words, it’s beyond our control and the result is beautiful chaos.

In that moment, the brain and the jock were standing on the precipice. He’d taken the time to learn me before making his move, instinctively knowing I needed that moment to be something I couldn’t have written or planned or even braced myself for.

But now, I remember…

His endlessly deep voice like the rasp of a rosined bow over my nerve endings. The intensity in his moonlit brown eyes as he made himself vulnerable to me, laying his desire at my feet, surrendering his control. I was hypnotized, barely squeaking out a nod, falling like a wing-less fairy not bothering to reach for her pouch of fairy dust. I was a goner before he laid those gorgeous lips on me. My last first kiss. The cool autumn night a contrast to the cocoon of heat created with the man who was helping me write the most perfect first kissing scene I couldn’t begin to do justice with words.

It changed the course of my life in an instant. And I'm convinced we anxiously await that moment on the page because while it likely differs greatly from our own experience, and it isn’t meant to belittle or replace a perhaps less eloquent reality, what it does is transport us back to that pivotal moment in our story where we had no need for paper because we wrote the memory on our hearts. The paper kiss’s power lies in its ability to flood us with emotions and memories from those first inklings of falling. Of recognizing that shift in your heroine’s journey as if you were walking in her shoes and learning love all over again. That kiss…It’s more than tangled lips and shared breath. It’s nostalgia. That first flicker of promise, the first glimpse of happily ever after. It’s hope for the loved and the lonely alike. And sometimes all it takes is one beautiful kiss to light the way.

Anyone brave enough to kiss and tell? What is it YOU remember about that fateful moment? If you could take your best first kiss and put it on paper, one detail or the whole enchilada, how would it read?

Kiss and Tell: Spontaneous Smooching!

Dr. Love is on the block this fine Friday! And I’ve noticed it’s been a while since we’ve had a kiss-a-thon. I think I’m having withdrawals. You too? Our last Kiss-and-Tell session was a wildly successful scrimmage of fabulous, sweet, steamy, playful, and passionate kissing scenes pulled from your stories. What fun!!!! I mean, come on, who doesn’t crave a kiss scene from page one, right?

OF COURSE, we have to wait and build the tension, ect. But that right there is my current problem. I’m picking through the initial pages of my WIP, setting up the plot, getting acquainted with the characters, establishing their chemistry, and already I’m itching for a lip-lock between the two! I can just picture it! And I want that kiss. Badly!

So, since I’m so incredibly patient by nature, I went ahead and penned a few kisses that are what I like to call spontaneous smooches. These are dreamed up, out of order quips and clips that will hopefully fit into my story as it progresses. In other words, the mood struck, so I wrote. Be a shame to waste a perfectly good make out session but hey it happens. Oh, how I suffer for my art.

Just in case this doesn’t make the cut I thought I’d kick off this Kiss-and-Tell session with a very rough, off-the-cuff kiss scene that I wrote on my phone at about 1 am last week simply because I wanted my characters to get a-smoochin’ and I couldn’t sleep without that goodnight kiss!

And I’ll need full audience participation to make this fun! Post up a past or current kiss scene in any stage of revision. It doesn’t have to be polished or perfectly thought out it just has to include some semblance of a lip-on-lip action! I can hardly wait to read them!

Alright pucker up, people! There’s no better way to kick off the weekend than by getting your kiss on!

MUAH!

I’ll be brave and go first… Here’s some banter and a smooch from Livi Lux and Aiden Reid in my WIP Lady Luck

 ...

“Pfft! New Yorkers are always touting their grit but I'm from St. Louis. Serial killers, rioting, the east side. I think I can handle a little island stroll. Besides, I took a class in Krav Maga, last year. I’m basically a butt-kicking machine. Don’t mess with me." Huh. What do you know? The whole ‘I am woman, hear me roar’ thing? Actually quite satisfying.

Satisfying. But perhaps not entirely convincing if Aiden’s amused expression is anything to go by.

"Oh, so you had a face-off with Vivaldi? Took a gander across the Ead's bridge and enjoyed an afternoon tea with the EL6 crew?"

"Don't be condescending. You might be pretty but that dress does nothing for your figure."

"Pretty?" Aiden growls like a sexy-beast, a playful glint in those steely grey eyes.

I bat my eyes. "Does that wound your masculine pride, sweetiekins? Retraction. Follow-up. Rugged. You look very rugged in your condescending dress."

He laughs, so full and warm and easy I’m shivering. Figure that one out. And then he's shaking his handsome head. "I always seem to be doing that with you."

"What, cross dressing?"

Stepping forward, he traps a lock of my golden-red hair, rubbing the strands between his thumb and forefinger. "Laughing. Smiling."

He leans in, twining the hair around his knuckle and gently tugging me closer, his words a whispered brush of contact. "Kissing."

And then he's doing just that. Kissing. Which somehow seems too simple a word for what he's doing to me.

Dang, it's just... It's... Wow. It's wow and so much more than wow the words may not exist to expound upon it. Surely as a journalist I could find some. But nope, his lip-lock is literally reducing my vocabulary.

Mmm. I hum into the stupefying kiss, fully surrendered, and add a little wow of my own.

"Wow." He murmurs against my lips, cupping my face and stroking my cheek with his callused thumb.

Yep, still shivering despite the balmy island climate. And before I'm rendered completely inarticulate I echo my agreement. "My thoughts exactly. More wow, please."

Pucker Up … and kiss like you mean it!

Fair warning: Not a G-rated post… then again, I seriously doubt anyone reading this is under the age of 7 so I shouldn’t upset any delicate sensibilities.

In the words of Meg Ryan from one of my all time favorite movies French Kiss… “A kiss… two peoples’ lips together, their breath, a little bit of their soul…”

I agree with Meg. “A kiss is where the romance is.”

Mmm, there is nothing quite like a first kiss, is there? And I’m not just talking about in fiction. ;) Though, I know most of us die-hard romance readers wait anxiously for the first tangle of lips on the page. But that’s the thing about fiction. It has the power to cross over that invisible plane and find a grip in reality. When the character embraces that first kiss, we can almost feel it as we live vicariously through them, reliving our own memories of budding romances and earth-shattering kisses.

Unfortunately, far too often fiction falls wayyyyy short of the real thing. I mean, come on… we’ve all got swoony romance on the brain if we are writing a love story. Many of us are living in our own happily ever after, and yet… the kiss we pen on the page is stale. Vague. Unrealistic. Utterly unremarkable.

Well, for today you can call me the kiss doctor because I may just have the remedy to rev up your smooch.

So here is where I kiss and tell: 3 Keys of KISS Perfection!

1. ANTICIPATION

Oh, I can hardly stand it! The tension. The seductive dance of possibility in that moment of shared breath. Will he? Won’t he? Just kiss the girl! Or for heavens sake, chick, grab that man and kiss him senseless! How many of you know that the moments preceding the kiss are almost as important as the kiss itself. Bringing the reader to their breaking point with a near kiss moment can illicit a hot flash as smokin’ as the moment those sparks ignite in a meeting of lips.

How are you building your tension here? What is your character thinking? Have they envisioned what it might be like? Is that shivery touch pre-kiss a tingling anticipation of what’s to come? Play up your senses in the seconds before. Let your character slip into a moment of fantasy. Sometimes this isn’t even directly before the kiss. Often you can steadily build that slow burn from the first moment they meet on the page. Other times you want the tension to be so tight, so unexpected, so heady at that precipice, we can do nothing but hold our breath and silently beg for that first kiss.

2. SENSATION

Think about real life. Married or not, do you remember that first kiss with someone special? How many of you can attest--not all kisses are created equal. With the right someone there is more than just woven lips and shared saliva (sorry, not the prettiest picture there) but there is heat, and sweetness, and hunger (oh, yes I did! Kissing: the gateway drug) and don’t forget…. MAGIC!

Hopefully, when you are mid-kiss you aren’t thinking about your enormous pile of laundry, what you’re going to make for dinner, or what your schedule looks like tomorrow. The kiss we want to read about is the kind that transcends a time frame, it transcends rational though, and becomes a bundle of sensations. The first tentative brush of smooth soft lips. The catch in the back of your throat. The butterflies that flutter through your pulse. The feel of his hair between your fingers, the roughness of his jaw scraping your skin. The press of his fingers against your spine.

Do you remember that kiss? I sure do! I remember exactly what it felt like when my husband made his first move. I remember standing by my car door saying goodnight, I remember the uncertain yet smoldering look in his eyes when he asked for the kiss, the slight smile that curved my lips and trapped my breath before I looked up from heavy-lidded eyes and nodded. The anticipation! And then, BAM! Sensation took over. And I wasn’t just simply feeling his full lips on mine. It was a dance. Our breath tangled and I breathed him in. My arms acted on their own, slipping around his warm neck, testing the softness of his hair. My blood super-heated. Heck, my foot probably would have popped if I hadn't ended up backed against the cool metal of my SUV. I felt new. Alive. I was completely swept away. Each of my senses were honed and heightened by the exploration. It wasn’t tawdry or obscene… and writing a detailed kiss doesn't have to be either. Just because you expound on the experience doesn't make it some clawing, sleazy thing.

A kiss contains romance, and passion… a precursor of things to come. If I can’t see or feel or taste that kiss you wrote in some way, it loses its power and becomes a cardboard representation of something meant to be unforgettable.

So whether you write conservative romance or more spicy stuff, know that your most innocent details stir your readers response. They give credibility to the emotion of the scene. And most importantly, they put your reader in a moment worth reading about.

3. RECOLLECTION

Okay, seriously…why waste all that goodness? A kiss doesn’t expire when lips untangle. The memory of the kiss is just as potent as act itself. I hate it when I read a book that belittles the effects of a solid smooch. I mean, if you are really good and kissed there is no way you forget about it, right?

So reach back and draw out those stolen moments. Revisit the sensational reaction of such a simple touch. (Yes, Meg… this is where the romance is. This is where the line is crossed between friends and lovers. Spark!) Is there something that comes back to mind later when they are either desperate to forget it or can’t stop reliving the glorious and long-awaited moment? When you are wrapped up in a swoon-worthy kiss there are often things that go unprocessed at the time. Things that return to us and make us sigh, or blush, or grow giddy as a school-girl. Draw on your own experience, or dare to dream about a kiss that could turn your world upside down. THIS is the kiss to write. This is the kiss we crave on the page. The kiss that reminds us of the magic of falling. And the undeniable connection in a perfect match!

Your turn to kiss and tell! Share one of your kiss scenes—just for fun or for some pointers. Juicy or tame, all are welcome here! (I’m obviously not shy.) So go on… pucker up! Make it count. Let’s wrap up this week with a kiss! MUAH!
