Podcast Recommendations for Writers

This year, I finally emerged from the Dark Ages and got into podcasts. It has been one of the biggest game changers in my life! For one, it's an easy way to learn, be inspired, and stay connected that fits with my lifestyle, and two, I actually look forward to doing chores now. Podcasts definitely put a pep in my step as I'm doing the dishes or picking up Legos.

Here are my favorite podcasts for writers, ones that have survived the test of time. And by that, I mean I'm very selective about what does and doesn't make the cut, as we all should be.

Great information:

  • The Hope*Writers Podcast with Emily P. Freeman, The Nester, their awesome dad, and marketing guru Brian Dixon: Great information that's especially helpful for nonfiction authors and bloggers but applies across the board.
  • The Creative Penn: Conversations between one of the smartest bloggers in writing and her expert friends. Plus, Joanna Penn has an Australian accent, so you can't go wrong. (Tip: I usually skip the first ~30 minutes she is giving her basic writing update.)
  • Writing Excuses: So much helpful information about writing here, from studies of different genres to plot techniques and more. Definitely worth exploring their archives for sure!
  • 10 Minute Writer's Workshop: This podcast asks seasoned authors questions that explore their craft and writing process. Very interesting to get this glimpse!

For your writerly soul:

  • Chasing Creative: While it isn't writing-specific, this one focuses on the pursuit of creative work as a "side-hustle" -- making your writing/art a priority in your busy life.
  • What Should I Read Next?: The internet's favorite literary matchmaker Anne Bogel discusses books with a different person each week and aptly recommends three books to him/her based on his or her answers. Let's just say my book budget has suffered because of all of her intriguing recommendations. Reading begets writing, y'all!

That's it! Have you heard of any of them? I love discovering new podcasts, so be sure to leave your favorites in the comments!
