Bringing the Bible to Life through Amazing Love with K. Dawn Byrd

Good morning, Alley Pals and visitors. Pepper here, and today, help me welcome author, K. Dawn Byrd for a little chat about writing, and more specifically about writing Biblical allegory. Dawn is author of over 10 books, and all of them have come out within the past 4 years. She works full time as a counselor and spends her free-time writing, hanging out with her sweet hubby, or riding on her Harley J

I was blessed to get to attend my first ACFW conference with Dawn in 2010. We roomed together - and she put up with me quite well.

Now, for you readers out there, Dawn is a fantastic resource regarding epublishing and writing in the ‘nooks and crannies’ of life. She’s also adept at writing in various genres (so we have another thing in common J)

She’s written nonfiction, YA, contemporary romance, historical, and suspense….but today, she’s going to specifically target her new release, Amazing Love – a modern day retelling of the Hosea/Gomer story.

Welcome to The Writers Alley, Dawn!

Let's talk about the joys and challenges of bringing a Biblical story to the modern day. Authors are lucky that Scripture is sometimes vague about the details in some stories. For example, my latest novel, Amazing Love, is a modern-day Hosea and Gomer story. We know from Scripture that Hosea marries a prostitute and that she is unfaithful. The fact that the Bible doesn't give much detail allowed my imagination to run wild about how my heroine would betray her preacher husband and the consequences she would suffer for her sin.

Amazing Love was such a joy to write. It ministered to my heart in so many ways. The reader take away is that God loves us unconditionally no matter what. Period. No matter how low we sink in sin, no matter how great our indiscretions, no matter how many tears we bring to God's eyes, He loves us with an everlasting love. That's not to say that He won't let us suffer the consequences for our actions. Amazing Joy was such a joy to write because it reminded of God's unfailing love for His children.

It really sounds like a great story. So now that you’ve been writing a while, what books on writing have been the most helpful to you and why?

It's not really a book, but I'll tell you about it anyway. Margie Lawson's on-line classes made more impact on me and my writing style that anything else I've ever studied. They're very affordable too!

Every writer has a different reason for writing. What’s yours?

I write because I can't stop. It's more than a hobby, it's a passion. It's the most fun I've ever had in my life!

 Sounds familiar. :-)

Thanks so much for being a part of The Alley today, Dawn, and sharing your excitement about your new book.

Okay, so Dawn is going to try and stop by today to answer some questions. Bring them on. Also, if you’ve read a book or books that have taken a Bible story and modernized it (or placed it somewhere else in history) what did you like about it?

If you could rewrite a Bible story, which would you choose?

Biblical retellings are more common than you think, and range from closely linked version to loose interpretations. C.S. Lewis paints a closer allegory of the story of Christ in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Liz Curtis Higgs brings the Old Testament to Scotland in her beautiful stories beginning with Thorn in My Heart and MY favorite, Mine is the Night.

What are your thoughts?

YA Writing with K. Dawn Byrd

Pepper here, and I am THRILLED to have my last year ACFW roomie, encourager, and friend, K.Dawn Byrd as a guest here today. Here's a pic of me and Dawn last year.

Dawn likes to cover lots of different genre, but her newest (and her current favorite) is Young Adult. What's drawn you into the world of teenagers, Dawn?

Thanks for hosting me today on the Writer's Alley! You asked me to talk about writing young adult fiction. First of all, it's a new genre for me and it's so much fun to write! After writing my debut young adult novel, Mistaken Identity, I was hooked. I love the spark of first love, the magic of a first date, the wonder of a first kiss and the innocence of youth.

The biggest challenge for me starting out was to get my voice right. I've always written romantic suspense for adults, which can be pretty dark and serious. I had to tone that down and bring in what was hopefully a more youthful and light-hearted voice. I ran the first chapter by a good friend who is also a published author and when she said the voice was right, I continued on. I've found that it's so important to have a good sounding board when venturing out into unchartered waters.

The teenage years can be so difficult and so full of drama and I wanted to portray this in my story. I added quite a bit of drama in Mistaken Identity by developing a love triangle. Two best friends, one a gorgeous party girl and the other a sweet Christian, fall in love with the same guy. Eden, the Christian, believes he's the perfect guy for her, but feels that she'll lose him because a guy would have to be crazy not to fall for her gorgeous best friend, Lexi. Drama can add tension in just the right places to keep the pages turning.

Teenagers are smart today and a lot of things compete for their attention. The internet. Their friends. Cheerleading practice. Homework. That's why it's so important to keep the plot moving forward. After all, the goal is to keep the pages turning. When I edited Mistaken Identity, I cut a couple of scenes before turning it in because I thought they slowed down the pacing. If I'm getting bored, I KNOW teenagers will be!

I enjoy writing for the young adult market so much that I've signed a three-book contract for a mystery/romance series that will debut in January 2012, with two more to follow in June and December. The Zoe Mack Mystery series will be heavier on the romance than the average mystery series because I love romance as much as I love mystery and it's not easy to find a mystery with a strong romance. You can follow my progress on a new blog where I'll give updates from time to time about the series. www.zoe-mack.blogspot.com. And, if you like Christian fiction, authors give away 3-5 books per week on my blog at www.kdawnbyrd.blogspot.com.

In addition, my publisher recently gave me the green light for a sequel to Mistaken Identity. Several readers had written in and asked for more, so in Shattered Identity, I'll be telling Lexi's story. Shattered Identity will release in April 2012. I've already started plotting and am adding lots of drama and consequences for bad decisions. The gorgeous Lexi, seems to never learn from her mistakes and hopefully, her form of drama will keep the pages turning!

Thanks for being with us today, Dawn. I love hearing about your new adventure in the world of YA - and I can't wait to meet Zoe!! It's like Nancy Drew with a twist.

What's Up The Street For Next Week?

I don't know about where you live, but where I live, it's FAIR WEEK!

Which means, there are animals, rodeo, 4H and FFA projects, livestock auctions and SO MUCH MORE going on!

We've got animals judging yesterday and Thursday and the parade today (which I'll be riding in with the rest of the family)-- it's got to be one of my favorite times of the year!

Plus in my small community, it's about the only time of year I get to see a bunch of people I know. ;-)

So while I'm off waving at the 100's turned out to watch the pararde floats and listen to the marching band, here is what is...

C.H.O.C.O.L.A.T.E. for the Post-Contest Blues

Pepper here - so get ready for a LOOOOONG  post.
It's a good day for encouragement, especially since Genesis semi-final news came out on Friday.

If you have 5 minutes, get some chocolate for your heart.

C – Cry – Proverbs 13:12 -Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.
It’s your story, you can cry if you want to.  Being upset, confused, disillusioned, and disappointed is part of the contest circuit. After all, we’re sending out our little babies into the war – judges carrying red pens to possibly scar our flawless novels. Scary! Been there more times than I have fingers. It’s a part of the learning curve for writers. But remember good judges have preferences, styles, experiences, and points of view from which they score your manuscript – and each one can be VERY different. Just this weekend, on the manuscript I THOUGHT would final but DIDN’T, I received two similar scores and then one that had a 40 point score discrepancy. WHOA! That’s a big difference.

H- Hold Back – Ecclesiastes 8:1 - There's nothing better than being wise, Knowing how to interpret the meaning of life. Wisdom puts light in the eyes, And gives gentleness to words and manners.
Don’t start blaming others or yourself. ‘Hold Back’ from reacting in a negative way that could give others a bad impression of you. People respond in different ways over contest results. Instead of plotting novels, some start plotting ways to squish the judges. Don’t waste all your creative energy on something as useless as THAT. Also, ‘hold back’ from thinking you are the WORST WRITER EVER. It’s a contest, not a degree from college. This one moment in time does not define you as a writer. It didn’t cost you enough money to have that kind of power over you J

O – Others – Proverbs 27:9 - 9 Just as lotions and fragrance give sensual delight,
a sweet friendship refreshes the soul
.

One of the best cures for disappointment is finding someone who will listen. Someone who has been through the same thing and understands. My writing buddies, especially Sherrinda, Casey, Mary, K. Dawn Byrd, and the Seekers have been a massive encouragement to me when I didn’t final in the Genesis last year, and didn’t place in 2 other contests either. Knowing they had worked through similar discouragement, grown, and even gotten published gave me the courage to lift my head, stop wallowing in self-pity (mostly), and try again.

C – Chocolate – Do I really need to explain this one? Isaiah 55:1 (taken totally out of context) Why do you spend your money on junk food, your hard-earned cash on cotton candy? Listen to me, listen well: Eat only the best, fill yourself with only the finest. J

0 – Optimism/Humor –Proverbs 12:24 - Worry weighs us down; a cheerful word picks us up.
Proverbs 17:22 - Laughter is good medicine. Seriously. J And for the disillusioned heart, it can be a good source of healing. Perspective changes everything. The trip is always longer when you focus on how long it is, instead of focusing on the destination. Finding humor or joy in the middle of discouragement is the key to climbing from the mire and back onto the playing field. God loves humor, btw, he made a donkey TALK!

L – Learn – Proverbs 18:15 - Wise men and women are always learning, always listening for fresh insights.

I know, some of you may think you’ve reached the state of perfection, but I’m pretty sure our glorified bodies are only meant for post-mortem experiences. As you read through edits or critiques, or judge’s comments, take the opportunity to prayerfully consider them. Grow as a writer.  And while you prepare for your next contest or submission – study and learn. There are plenty of resources out there.
A – Attitude – Philippians 2:13 Do everything readily and cheerfully—no bickering, no second-guessing allowed! Go out into the world uncorrupted, a breath of fresh air in this squalid and polluted society. Provide people with a glimpse of good living and of the living God.

Much like ‘O for Optimism’, your attitude and determination about growing as a writer will help you put contest scores into perspective. Will you be bummed? Mad? Probably, but then what? Though anger might feel like a good starting point for growing (using all that energy it provides), you fizzle out pretty fast if that’s the only motivator. Something deeper inside you has to push you forward from one contest, or one story, to the next. An inner drive? A passion? A calling? Personally, for me- I feel God’s called me to this writing gig. And who He calls, he also equips. My mantra: God’s timing, my perseverance.

T – Time – Psalm 37:18 - God keeps track of the decent folk; what they do won't soon be forgotten. In hard times, they'll hold their heads high; when the shelves are bare, they'll be full.
The phrase ‘time heals all wounds’ applies here fairly well. It certainly doesn’t apply across the board, but in contests…yeah. Again, perspective. As I distanced myself from the disappointment and judges’ comments, I was able to read them from a fresh perspective. Take the good. Toss the bad. Pray – and read them again.

E – Enter –Psalm 31:24 – Be brave. Be strong. Don't give up. Expect God to get here soon.
Don’t give up. Try again. Whether it’s reentering a contest, submitting to an agent, or hoping an editor will take notice of your work – one failure or rejection is just another step toward publication. Submitting is hard.
Scary.
But there is valuable information waiting on the other end of the ‘submission’ button – maybe even a win or a contract.
Ruth Logan Herne once said – if you don’t try, you’ll fail 100% of the time.
(The picture to the right is in honor of Annabelle Phillips, who received a new heart Saturday night. She and her family have been brave and strong for a long time. Praise God)

Keep writing.

Keep dreaming.

Keep trying.

The perfect dessert for the writer’s soul.

Debuting in the World of E-Publishing with author K. Dawn Byrd

Good morning everyone. Pepper here, and I want to introduce you to my friend and newly published author, K. Dawn Byrd. Dawn and I became buddies about six months ago, when we found out we were only about an hour’s drive from each other. Since we both live in a very rural part of the world, it was nice to make another Christian writer discovery.

Since then, she’s suffered through phone conversations with me – in the middle of my typical (and quite chaotic) life. Btw, if you’ve ever been on the phone with a fellow author, the bill can go up rather quickly. Once we finally have the opportunity to share our story ideas with people who don’t immediately get a glazed expression, we have a tendency to get overly excited. Anyone else know what I’m talkin’ about here? ;-)

So – to welcome in Dawn, we’re going to have bagels (various kinds – from cinnamon and raisin to chocolate chip) and a special GIVEAWAY!! Dawn is offering one lucky commenter an x-large gray t-shirt with the cover of her last book, Queen of Hearts, on the front or if the winner doesn't wear an XL, a mousepad and signed poster.

Dawn’s debut book, Queen of Hearts, came out in June through Desert Breeze Publishing. Her next ebook, Killing Time, comes out in August. Besides fiction, Dawn has a few nonfiction projects in the works too, including a book for motorcyclists.

Okay, so let’s get started. Dawn, so glad to have you here today with us on The Writers Alley.

1. I’m new to ebooks, so I’m curious about your love for them. What do you find so exciting about the whole ‘ebook’ industry?

The thing I love about ebooks is that they can be read anywhere, any time. I read them on my Blackberry. If I carry a purse that's too small to hold a book, I always have my Blackberry with me. Right now, there are twenty-eight books in my Blackberry. Can you imagine carrying twenty-eight books with you everywhere you go?

I love the fact that I can adjust the font. Right now, the words on my Blackberry screen are larger than a paperback's print. Sometimes I read in bed at night and don't have to worry about disturbing my husband because my screen is backlit.

2. Lots of people have stories about publication taking years and years. Your story is bit different. Tell us a little about your journey to publication?

I've been writing for over two years. I'm very much a perfectionist and I spent a long time studying every book I could find on craft. I spent countless hours researching the internet, soaking "craft" up like a sponge. I'm a perfectionist, but I'm not saying I'm the best writer in the world, I'm just saying that I'm not happy unless I've done the best job that I can do at that moment. I want to turn out stories that I can be proud of and hope that I become a better writer with every book.

3. Queen of Hearts was your first release. Can you give us a blurb about it?

Here's the blurb from my publisher:

Daphne Dean is proud to be serving her country stateside during WWII as a reporter and an Office of Strategic Services operative. When the photograph she takes of the crowd at a murder scene places her on the mob's hit list, she's forced into hiding in a vacant mental asylum in the middle of nowhere with terrifying secrets of its own.

Daphne believed herself to still be in love with her ex-fiancée, Kenneth, until she spends several days locked away in the asylum with Vito, the mob boss' son. Can she put the terrifying events that occurred there behind her and allow herself to pursue a relationship with Vito? Or, will she return to Kenneth who has turned his back on his country by becoming a draft dodger and a black market racketeer? One thing's for sure, it won't matter if she can't escape the mental institution alive.

4. Queen of Hearts is not your first novel, although it’s your first published one. Your first book is coming out in August, isn’t it? What’s it about?

My first book, Killing Time, will release from Desert Breeze Publishing. Here's the blurb:

Mindy McLaurin, thinks it's the end of the world when she's incarcerated on trumped-up embezzlement charges. While in jail, she investigates the death of an inmate who allegedly died of an overdose. Mindy suspects foul play when her cellmate dies and she learns that both women had ingested the same drug. Mindy trusts no one, including Drew Stone, the handsome counselor she can’t stop thinking about. She faces many challenges, including constant interrogation by the Major and emotional abuse from the other inmates. Upon release, someone is stalking her and framing her for the murder. Can she prove to Counselor Stone that she’s innocent of all charges before she loses him forever?

5. What do you love best about your hero and heroine in Queen of Hearts?

I love Daphne Dean for several reasons. She's loyal to her country and her employer. She's a Christian with high morals. Another thing that I really like about her is that she's not perfect. She tries so hard to be a good spy, but it seems like she can't do anything right. This makes her more human and more likeable in my eyes.

There are two male counterparts in the novel and the way it's set up, the reader will have a hard time figuring out who she'll end up with in the end. Daphne doesn't even know for a long time because she struggles with feelings for both of them.

Kenneth is Daphne's ex-boyfriend. They've been boyfriend/girlfriend since childhood. He was an all around good guy until becoming involved with the mob. I like Kenneth because he cares for Daphne, but I don't like the choices he makes.

Vito is the mobster's son. He's gorgeous and a Christian whose father can barely tolerate him because of his faith. He's charming, but at times Daphne doesn't trust him and doesn't know whose side he's on.

6. What do you love best about hero and heroine in Killing Time?

Mindy McLaurin is a very strong Christian who is wrongly accused and incarcerated. She's harassed in jail by a bully and her boyfriend detective refuses to bail her out because he needs her to investigate the murder of an inmate. Upon release, Mindy is stalked, held against her will, and almost murdered. Even though she becomes angry at God at times, she never loses her faith.

The hero, Drew Stone, is a jail counselor. His wife died of cancer and Mindy senses that he's suffered a tragedy that he's not fully recovered from upon meeting him when he books her into jail. He falls in love with Mindy, but is very cautious due to the fact that it could cause him to lose his job. At one point, he believes that he's being framed for the murder of the inmate.

Mindy's detective boyfriend, Mitch, is handsome, charming, and an opportunist. He's recently been hired by the murdered inmate's mother who wants to know what really happened to her daughter. The jail ruled it as suicide. She's not buying it. Mitch refuses to bail Mindy out because he needs someone on the inside to investigate.

Who will she choose in the end? The handsome counselor she can't stop thinking about or the detective that's really the first gorgeous man who's ever taken an interest in her?

Oh boy, sounds great Dawn. Thanks for sharing this info with us and introducing us to your work. Btw, did I tell everyone that Dawn is my ACFW room-mate. You all will know how to pray for her now, right?

So, what have you guys read any ebooks? Did you enjoy the easy access? What did you think? We’d love to get your opinions.
