If you've been reading the last several days, there's a theme of Places that Inspire going on at The Writer's Alley. And, um, now that I think about it, I think I misunderstood the assignment. Oops.
Today, I'm sharing a glimpse into my writerly world via the many wild and wonderful places I sneak in word count.
Sometimes my babies will distract each other and let me eek out a few words.
Sometimes my word count comes during my lunch break from my day job. Okay, often.
Sometimes when my desk looks like this...
I like to spread out on the floor.
{Side note: my parents used to find me asleep next to my school books}
Or my amazing husband hangs out with the kids so I can sneak to a coffee shop!
Other than these pictured writing nooks, my two biggest founts of inspiration are the shower and the treadmill. In fact, I plotted the last quarter of my WIP tonight with my critique partner on the phone while I ran a few miles at the gym!
I know you're a busy bee, too. How (and where) do you make writing a priority?

Love your pictures and your colorful plotting! :)
ReplyDeleteWhen my kids were younger, I too spent time at the coffee shop - waiting for dance class to be over, working on deadlines, and so on. Now I spend most of my time in my office (since our birdies have flown the nest, we have space for an office). If I am planning, then I like to spread out on the kitchen table. When gathering ideas, that just happens anywhere! Must travel with pen and paper. :)
ReplyDeleteLoved this, Laurie! Especially with young kids, you get the word count in wherever and whenever you can! :)
ReplyDeleteIt sounds crazy, but my favorite place to write is my kitchen table. It's usually somewhat cleared off (all the piles are to my right, on the counter). When I open the curtains to our back yard, I can watch the clouds, the birds in our yard, or whatever else is hopping. It's a nice, open space, and I am discovering I LIKE that.
I also write in my project room. When the kids are home, I shut the door. I usually watch the sun set and it's colors on the mountains around us.
To make writing a priority, I usually add it to my calendar as an appointment. Now that I think about that, I haven't done this in a few weeks! :) It helps me to take it more seriously. Also, when my kids are home, I try to be focused on them rather than on writing.
Wow! Running and plotting? That's awesome!
ReplyDeleteI plot in the shower too. LOL Or with my headphones firmly on my head in the livingroom with my notebooks around me to jot down anything/everything that comes to mind.
Just have to say--I love coming here and get an extra shot of writing inspiration as I sip my coffee every morning before I start in on my WIP
@Christen - It was more of a "shuffle"/walk break/email back LOL
ReplyDelete@Jules - You know how I feel about color coding!!!
@Angie Q. - I think we think the same way! Spread out is best to organize the wildness going on in there :) I have a pen and paper in my car, beside my bed, etc. and a notes app full of inspiration on my phone!
@Jeanne - Genius! (New nickname: Jeanne-us) Love love love the idea of scheduling it on the calendar!
@Meghan - Shower plotters unite! And thanks for stopping by! We love having you :)
Wow. Just wow! You are amazing, and I'm so proud of you for staying up with NaNoWriMo. So impressive! :) (I'm over here floundering, but that's okay. :) Grace for that, right? Ha!)
